How do I get myself out of debt?

They say that there are many ways to solve a problem. Just like figuring the answer to a mathematical equation, you are not limited to one solution. Here are some of the many ways you can get yourself out of a seemingly bottomless pit of debt:

  • Find a credible non-profitable credit-counseling program. There are a lot of non-profitable organizations who are ready to help you get out of debt. Don’t worry about spending too much money, because most of their funding comes from creditors. However, don’t be too trusting yet. Read and understand their policies and their enrollment and monthly fees. This is YOUR money we’re talking about here. You wouldn’t want it to fall into the wrong hands right? The Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA) has stated the nominal fee to enroll is only at $75, while a monthly fee could be up to $50.
  • Inquire about the services you will receive. These are what you have signed up anyway. Services have to include counseling, debt-repayment plans and budgeting advice. The more services available, the better chances you can get yourself out of debt.
  • Consider that the organization belongs to any professional groups. There are groups who deal with debt management professionally like the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and the Better Business Bureau. Ask them about how your funds are audited and if they are guarded against crimes such as identity theft.
  • Develop a “one-pay plan”. Having a “one-pay plan” would allow you to purchase what you need at the same time, “whittle away at the balances you owe”. This will be helpful both to you, your credit counselor, and to the service (which will distribute the money). If this doesn’t work out, maybe it’s time to consider having a debt-consolidation loan.
  • BUDGET. You may say to yourself, “I budget! I take care of the rent, electricity, water and etc.” Yes, we have to budget those with big amounts, but how about those that you spend everyday? It is also very important to take note on how much you spend on transportation services, eating out and even laundry cleaning. If you find it troublesome to budget your money, then seek help from your counselor. They are trained for this, and they know what you should do.

Don’t let yourself sulk over the amount of debt you have to pay. Manage your debt… NOW!
