Safeguarding from identity theft is not an easy task; there are several identity theft avenues that are beyond your control. But with few measures you can definitely minimize the identity theft chances surely.

To begin with protect your personal details by all means. The account numbers list should not be left unlocked as well as do not share your passwords with any individual. Keep your personal monetary information safe. 

Acquaint yourself well with the tactics as well as techniques employed in the identity theft and measures to protect you from them. If a mail contains some personal details such as your name, address and other information then do not dump it. Shred them into pieces prior to dumping it in the waste bin.

Make sure you do not disclose your personal details to your co-workers, roommates as well as friends. Till the time they also have to make a payment of your bills there is no reason that they should know about it. If you share any of your passwords with them then change them.
