Millions of people and billions of dollars each year; that is the figure that we are talking about with identity theft. While you work hard to maintain a good reputation, here goes these criminals taking advantage of us. For most people, they only realize that they had been victimized after few months; when the damages are too bad and already irreparable.
Most form of identity theft affects or involves our credit so have it as a habit checking and monitoring your credit reports to see whether there might be some discrepancies. It might have been happening the past few months but you brushed it off thinking you can’t be a victim. It could star from unfamiliar credit entries and bills and cold go as far as crimes committed under your name. Anyone could fall as a victim and unless you are a careful and organized record keeper, then there is nothing to worry.
If you’re wondering how very private information could have been in the possession of thieves? They are one of the most resourceful people in the world. They could find information in places we think it is impossible like our trash cans.
If you find it helpful and easier jotting down PINS and passwords on a piece of paper then toss it on the trash can after, then you are only sending an invitation to criminals. Dumpster divers are those who find treasures in other people’s trash. How could one’s trash be treasure to them?
There are some items that we throw carelessly which bears some useful information. Say, bill statements or passports. Several information about you are written on these items so if you really wanted to do some cleaning in your closet and would like to get rid of unnecessary stuff then the shredder is your best partner, it won’t only help you save a lot of space in your can or garbage bag but shredding paper trash would not give any small chance to dumpster divers.
Most of us have lost things in the past and seem not to be a bog deal but if it is your wallet bearing some personal stuff like identifications, credit cards, license and social security card then take the lost seriously. Waste no time and report the lost immediately before they could be used by thieves. Act before they act against you.
Speaking of cards and ids, never ever commit the mistake of leaving your home carrying with you your social security id or card. It would not also be good leaving without any identification in your purse but there could be any other ids you can use aside form the social security. When your purse gets lost with this id, then better pray hard it won’t fall into a criminal’s hand.
Do you own a check? If you do, better take a little more extra care. Fraud checks could be written by a criminal and you might realize in the end that you’re already charged of checks bouncing and worse a drained bank account.
Identity theft is actually easy to combat if everyone becomes mindful of their acts.
