Identity theft is one of the most common types of crime in the US. With the advancement of technology, more and more people today are uploading sensitive information on social websites and/or networks that has allowed cyber criminals to accomplish a theft with ease as well.

In order to be more aware of identity theft, it is wise to be aware of its different kinds so that effective steps for protection and precaution can be undertaken. Following are the most common types of identity thefts occurring in the USA today.

Credit/Financial Identity Theft

This is the most common types of identity theft. Over here, criminals steal credit card and financial information of an individual to purchase goods, assets and services in the name of that individual. In many cases, these criminals also take loans in the name of the individual which eventually results in a string of unpaid bills in the name of the owner.

Social Security Identity Theft

Since information from the social security card is tied up to almost all the things like jobs, purchasing a house, etc, this is one of the most valuable pieces of information that can be stolen. A criminal can use information from the social security card to and effectively impersonate someone to say, receive wages in his name after being hired for a new job. At the time of income tax season, the victim is forced to pay tax on those earnings, earnings that were not availed by him/her in the first place. Once an individual’s social security identity is stolen, it is highly likely that he/she will never be able to attain the life sustaining benefits that come with social security.

Child Identity Theft

This type of identity theft commonly occurs within the victim’s family circle, be it close or extended which is why it isn’t reported that commonly. However, it does not mean that this theft doesn’t actually occur. Children are the easiest target for these criminals as they only find out about this theft when they become adults.

Medical Identity Theft

Medical theft is attributed to be one of the most dangerous forms of identity crimes. Usually, these criminals use the victims name to purchase drugs that require prescriptions. Being a victim of medical identity theft can bar him/her from losing health coverage because of faulty information present on the medical history. Unfortunately, this kind is usually the hardest kind to catch and fix.
